The little Dezhung Rinpoche was not allowed to look at the texts or eat any of the offerings because he had not yet received the ritual initiation and blessings. But after the end of each Vajrayogini tantric feast (garzacakra), his uncle would ask him to take out a little plate of food to offer the remainder to the hungry spirits, and once he was safely outdoors in the courtyard or on the roof, he would first secretly help himself to the meat and fruit and then toss out the rest as offerings.
