Why South-east Asian women? Who cares? My attempts to secure a book contract met with similar disinterest until Joel Spring and my editor Naomi Silverman at Lawrence Erlbaum had the political insights to support and stand behind this project. In an increasingly global economic, cultural, and educational environment, the “far east” is no longer far or east in traditional modernist terms.
