Why South-east Asian women? Who cares? My attempts to secure a book contract met with similar disinterest until Joel Spring and my editor Naomi Silverman at Lawrence Erlbaum had the political insights to support and stand behind this project. In an increasingly global economic, cultural, and educational environment, the “far east” is no longer far or east in traditional modernist terms. Most of the women in this study are not on the outer fringes of global circuits of intellectual exchange or institutional networking but very much a part of the “new” local and regional cosmopolitanism.

Nearly a decade later, this observation remains accurate, as evidenced in the significant body of scholarship and case study research published in the last 10 years. Numerically, women’s participation has increased across the sector and position classifications in western and some newly industrializing countries. However, the largest increases for women have been in more junior, untenured, and part-time positions, where they often outnumber men. In a study of academic women in the United Kingdom, Ann Brooks (1997) notes a substantial increase of 143% in women’s professorial appointments over the decade 1981–91, but the actual “numbers of academic women compared to academic men remain small” (p.
